As a woodland grows, the trees within it compete increasingly with each other for light, water and nutrients. Without intervention, this competition suppresses the growth of all the trees in the stand, produces a closed canopy with little wildlife value, and eventually leads to the natural die-back of the weakest individuals. Thinning manages this process deliberately: removing selected trees to release the best specimens, accelerate their growth and introduce more light and variation into the woodland structure.
The trees removed during thinning may have value as timber, firewood or woodchip depending on species and size.
