A professional tree survey provides an objective, documented assessment of the trees on a site — their condition, any risks they present, and the management they require. Arbortech Professional Tree Services carries out tree and site surveys across Somerset for homeowners, developers, local authorities, land agents and estate managers.
We cover Taunton, Yeovil, Martock, Ilminster, Bridgwater, Wellington, Somerton and all surrounding towns and villages. Written quotations are provided on request.
Types of Survey
The appropriate type of survey depends on the purpose and the nature of the site. Common survey types include:
- Tree condition survey — a visual inspection of individual trees or a tree population, recording condition, any defects identified, and recommended management actions. Suitable for ongoing management of domestic or commercial tree stock.
- BS 5837 survey — the survey format required by planning authorities when a development application involves trees. Records the species, size, condition and category of every tree on or near the site, and produces a constraints plan showing root protection areas to inform the design process.
- Risk assessment survey — a targeted assessment of trees in locations where failure would pose a risk to people or property, such as trees overhanging car parks, play areas, public paths or buildings.
- Veteran and ancient tree assessment — a more detailed assessment of trees of particular ecological or heritage significance, recording features of value and recommending management appropriate to their status.
Surveys for Planning Applications
If you are submitting a planning application that involves trees — whether on your own land or on adjacent land within influencing distance of the development — a BS 5837 tree survey is almost always required by the planning authority. Submitting an application without one typically results in the authority requesting it before they will proceed, adding delay to the process.
We can carry out the survey, produce the required report and constraints plan, and advise on any implications for the design or layout of the development.
Free Site Visits and Regular Inspections
For straightforward domestic enquiries — such as checking whether a tree is safe, or advising on what work is needed — we offer free no-obligation site visits. For formal surveys that require a written report, a fee will apply depending on the size of the site and the scope of the survey required.
We also work with clients on a regular inspection basis, revisiting sites annually or biannually to check that trees remain in the condition recorded and that any recommended management has been carried out or remains appropriate.
