Once a tree has been felled, the remaining stump can be an obstruction, an eyesore and — in some species — a source of ongoing regrowth. Stump grinding is the most effective and efficient method of removal, and Arbortech Professional Tree Services offers stump grinding across Somerset as a standalone service or as part of a wider tree removal project.
We cover Taunton, Yeovil, Martock, Ilminster, Bridgwater, Wellington, Somerton and all surrounding towns and villages. Free, no-obligation site visits are available, and written quotations are provided on request.
How Does Stump Grinding Work?
Stump grinding uses a specialist machine fitted with a rotating cutting wheel to grind the stump down below ground level. Depending on your requirements, this can be done to a depth that simply removes the visible stump, or deeper to allow for replanting or laying turf over the area. The process produces wood chip, which can be used as a mulch or removed from site.
The machine size used will depend on the diameter of the stump and the access available — we have equipment suited to both open sites and restricted spaces such as back gardens with narrow gate access.
Why Grind a Stump?
There are several good reasons to remove a stump after felling rather than leaving it in the ground:
- Stumps of certain species — particularly cherry, elm, willow and poplar — will produce persistent regrowth if left in place
- Old stumps can harbour honey fungus and other root diseases that may spread to healthy trees
- Stumps are a trip hazard in lawns and grass areas
- They prevent effective grass cutting and can damage mower blades
- Removal frees up the ground for replanting, hard landscaping or construction
