What Is Hedge Laying?
Hedge laying involves cutting the main stems of a hedgerow partially through at the base and laying them at an angle along the line of the hedge, weaving them between upright stakes to form a dense, interlocked structure. The laid stems — known as pleachers — continue to grow, sending up vigorous new shoots that thicken the base of the hedge and create a barrier that is both physically strong and full of nesting and foraging habitat.

Why Lay a Hedge?
A well-managed hedgerow that is laid on a regular rotation — typically every ten to twenty years — stays dense and stock-proof at the base, where a neglected hedge will become gappy and leggy over time. Beyond the practical benefits, laid hedges are among the most valuable wildlife habitats in the farmed landscape, providing nesting cover for birds, foraging habitat for invertebrates and mammals, and movement corridors linking areas of woodland and rough ground.
Hedge laying may also qualify for support through Countryside Stewardship or other agri-environment schemes, depending on the nature of the hedgerow and your holding.
Is the Hedge Suitable for Laying?
Not all hedges are suitable candidates for laying. Overstood hedges that have grown into lines of trees may need initial management before laying can take place; very gappy hedges may need replanting in sections.
