Storm Damage and Tree Failure

Somerset’s location means it sees its share of significant storms, and even trees that appear healthy can fail under sustained high winds. Common emergency situations we deal with include:

  • Trees or large limbs fallen onto buildings, vehicles or boundary structures
  • Trees blocking roads, driveways or access routes
  • Partially uprooted trees leaning against structures or other trees
  • Large branches hanging or suspended in the canopy following a storm
  • Trees or branches brought down onto power lines or fencing

In all of these situations, the immediate concern is to make the area safe. Where trees have fallen onto structures or services, we will liaise with you and any other relevant parties to ensure the work is carried out safely and in the right sequence.

What to Do in a Tree Emergency

If a tree has fallen or is in immediate danger of causing injury or damage, the first step is to keep people clear of the area. Do not attempt to move or cut a tree that is resting on a structure, vehicle or overhead cable without professional assistance — the position of the tree may be providing temporary support, and disturbing it can make the situation significantly worse.

Call us as soon as possible and give us a clear description of the situation. We will advise you on immediate steps and get a team to you as quickly as we can.

Follow-Up Work After an Emergency

Once the immediate hazard has been dealt with, it is often worth commissioning a broader assessment of nearby trees — particularly if the failed tree showed no obvious advance signs of distress. Sudden failure can sometimes indicate an underlying site condition, disease or root issue that could affect other trees in the same area.
