Cable Bracing

Cable bracing is a specialist technique used to provide structural support to trees with weak unions, heavy lateral limbs or other features that increase the risk of failure. When applied correctly, it can significantly extend the life of a tree that would otherwise need to be removed. Arbortech Professional Tree Services installs and inspects cable bracing systems across Somerset.

We cover Taunton, Yeovil, Martock, Ilminster, Bridgwater, Wellington, Somerton and all surrounding towns and villages. Free, no-obligation site visits are available, and written quotations are provided on request.

What Is Cable Bracing?

A cable bracing system involves fitting high-tensile cables or flexible dynamic systems between the main stems or upper branches of a tree to redistribute load and reduce the risk of a failure at a weak point. Depending on the tree and the nature of the structural issue, rigid or dynamic bracing systems may be used — each has specific applications and advantages.

The installation is carried out by qualified arborists working at height, and requires a thorough assessment of the tree’s structure before any hardware is fitted.

When Is Cable Bracing Appropriate?

Cable bracing is typically considered when a tree has:

  • A co-dominant stem — two main trunks arising from a single point, which can split apart under load
  • A heavy lateral limb with a weak attachment point that cannot be safely removed without ruining the tree
  • Significant amenity or heritage value that makes removal undesirable
  • A condition identified in a tree survey as requiring active management

Bracing is not a substitute for proper ongoing management — braced trees should be inspected regularly to ensure the system remains effective and the tree’s condition has not deteriorated.

Part of a Wider Tree Management Plan

Cable bracing is most often installed as part of a broader management plan for a tree, sometimes alongside crown reduction to reduce wind loading, or deadwood removal to improve the overall risk profile. Our arborists can assess the tree as a whole and recommend the most appropriate combination of treatments.
