How Do Trees Become Dangerous?

Trees can become hazardous for a range of reasons, and the signs are not always obvious from ground level. Common causes include:

  • Internal decay caused by fungal infection, which may not be visible on the outside of the tree
  • Root damage from construction work, ground compaction or nearby excavation
  • Storm damage — including cracks or splits that are not immediately apparent
  • Dead or dying trees with weakened branch structures
  • Trees leaning progressively or showing signs of root heave
  • Co-dominant stems or included bark at branch unions, which significantly increase failure risk

If you have concerns about a tree on your land — or a neighbour’s tree that appears to be in a dangerous condition — the right first step is a professional assessment.

Assessment and Remedial Work

Our qualified arborists can visit, assess the tree and advise on the most appropriate course of action. In many cases, targeted pruning, deadwood removal or cable bracing can significantly reduce the risk without the tree needing to come down. Where the tree cannot be made safe, we will carry out removal efficiently and with the minimum necessary disruption.

For trees that require urgent attention, we also offer emergency tree work — please call us directly if the situation is time-sensitive.

Your Duty of Care as a Landowner

Landowners in the UK have a legal duty of care in relation to trees on their property. If a tree that you own or manage causes injury or property damage, and it can be shown that you were aware of the risk and failed to act, you may be held liable. Regular inspection of trees — particularly large, mature or visibly stressed specimens — is strongly recommended.
