Crown lifting is a straightforward but highly effective tree surgery technique that raises the height of the lower canopy, improving clearance and light without affecting the overall size or character of the tree. Arbortech Professional Tree Services carries out crown lifting across Somerset for homeowners, businesses, local authorities and landowners.
We cover Taunton, Yeovil, Martock, Ilminster, Bridgwater, Wellington, Somerton and all surrounding towns and villages. Free, no-obligation site visits are available, and written quotations are provided on request.
What Is Crown Lifting?
Crown lifting involves the selective removal of the lower branches of a tree to raise the base of the canopy to a specified height. The upper canopy is left largely undisturbed, so the tree retains most of its size, shape and character.
The technique is often carried out gradually over several years to avoid putting the tree under unnecessary stress — particularly with mature specimens where large lower limbs are involved.
Common Reasons for Crown Lifting
Crown lifting is typically requested when lower branches are causing a practical problem, such as:
- Obstructing pedestrian or vehicle access on paths, driveways or roads
- Blocking light to windows, gardens or adjacent land
- Brushing against buildings, fences or vehicles
- Reducing visibility at road junctions or site entrances
- Creating maintenance difficulties for grass cutting or ground-level work beneath the tree
It is one of the least disruptive pruning operations for the tree itself and, where it addresses the problem, is often preferable to a full crown reduction.
Carried Out to British Standards
All crown lifting work is carried out in compliance with BS 3998. Our qualified arborists will assess the tree carefully before recommending how much lift is appropriate — removing too many lower branches in a single operation can weaken the tree and affect its long-term health. Arbortech holds full public liability insurance and is an approved contractor for Somerset County Council and the Duchy of Cornwall.
