Why Install Boxes in Trees?

Many of our native bat and bird species have declined significantly in recent decades, in large part due to the loss of suitable roosting and nesting sites. Older buildings with accessible roof spaces, traditional barns and veteran trees with natural cavities have all become rarer. Boxes installed in mature trees can go some way to compensating for this loss, providing secure roost and nest sites in locations that are as close as possible to natural.

Trees offer several advantages over box installation on buildings — they are less prone to heat extremes, provide natural shelter, and position the box within or adjacent to the foraging habitat that bats and birds rely on.

Bat Boxes

All UK bat species are legally protected, and any work that could affect a roost — including tree surgery on trees where bats are known or suspected to be present — requires careful handling. Where we are installing bat boxes as part of a habitat enhancement programme or as mitigation for development, we can advise on suitable box types and positioning for the species most likely to be present in your area.

Boxes should be installed at height — typically a minimum of three to four metres — and positioned to receive the right amount of sun for the target species. Our team carries out all installation work using appropriate climbing and rigging equipment.

Bird Boxes

Different bird species have quite specific requirements in terms of entrance hole size, box dimensions and preferred location. We can advise on the right box specifications for the species you are hoping to attract, whether that is blue tits in a garden setting, barn owls on a farm, or hole-nesting species in a managed woodland.

Bat and Bird Box Installation Across Somerset

Box installation is frequently carried out alongside other tree work — combining it with planned crown work or maintenance visits keeps costs down and limits disturbance to the site. All work is carried out by fully insured professionals experienced in working at height in trees.
